ITALY CAN GO AHEAD WITH THE PRODUCTION OF rPET BOTTLES, 100% RECYCLED PET
PET plastic is part of the polyester family. It is a thermoplastic resin which due to its characteristics of transparency, resistance and gas barrier is suitable for the production of beverage bottles and trays. But not only that, also films, tubes, blisters, containers, packaging and labels.
The recycling of PET allows to give new life to plastic because at the end of the process the material is ready to be transformed into new bottles and many other objects. In fact, PET is the most widely used and reused plastic material in the food sector, precisely because it is able to keep its properties intact even after the recovery and recycling process.
Senator PD Andrea Ferrazzi’s amendment to the August decree, converted into law in October 2020, removed the obligation for companies to use at least 50% of raw material in the production of plastic bottles.
The rPET bottles, so far only available for import, can now be produced in Italy by mechanical companies that design and build machinery for the production of completely recycled PET, a very flourishing supply chain in our country, able to promote the circular economy of the sector. The estimated effects on the environment are really impressive! It is estimated that on a global scale, 100% PET recycling can save annually over 450,000 tons of petroleum and over 1.2 million tons of carbon dioxide derived from PET production.
