TV SCRAP BONUS, an “ecological bomb”: the importance of WEEE recycling

On September 1, 2021, arrived the fateful “switch off” that is forcing Italians to adapt TVs (those purchased before December 22, 2018) to the new technological standards of second generation digital terrestrial broadcasting, in order to continue watching TV programs. From now on, in fact, Italy will switch to the high definition standard.
For the purchase of televisions compatible with new technologies, the Government has provided an incentive, the so-called “TV Scrapping Bonus”, promoted by the latest Budget Law.
What is the “TV Scrapping Bonus”?
The “TV Scrapping Bonus” consists of a 20% discount on the purchase price, up to a maximum of 100 euros, which can be requested by scrapping, i.e. by replacing, the old TV with a new technologically advanced one (the purchase must take place by 31 December 2022).
The importance of recycling to recover raw materials
According to forecasts, compared to a standard annual sale of about 4.5 million TVs, for the current year a sale has been estimated that will reach about 6.5 million, and 9 million in 2022.
The “TV Scrapping Bonus”, defined as a “tsunami” for the recycling chain, will be a real “ecological bomb”. The alarm is launched by Aura, a company that operates in the transformation of WEEE, grappling with the maxi-disposal operation that will accompany the transition to the new digital terrestrial transmission standard: in about 15 months there will be over 15 million TVs from scrap!
It is obvious that the success of the initiative requires that the WEEE treatment sector is put in the right conditions to be able to receive this extraordinary flow of televisions with the objectives of maximizing secondary raw materials and reducing waste to landfill to zero. Properly recycling these electronic materials certainly becomes an opportunity to reduce the extraction of new raw materials!
CAMEC Solutions for the WEEE RECYCLING supply chain
The recovery centers will obviously have to provide themselves with machinery and plants suitable for the disposal and recovery of the various materials that make up this type of WEEE.
For some time CAMEC has specialized in WEEE Treatment Plants aimed at recovering the largest possible quantity of raw materials, such as plastic, cards, glass and metal to give them a second life.
CAMEC is able to realize systems with different configurations according to the different processing needs. The machines, which usually operate in combination with each other, are coordinated by a software that guarantees the correct execution of the various work phases.
Una volta che i rifiuti sono stati messi in sicurezza e sommariamente smontati, si procede con la fase di triturazione del materiale, che viene caricato su nastri trasportatori che lo avviano verso un trituratore bialbero o quadrialbero. A seconda del tipo di rifiuto, la macchina può essere utilizzata a differenti potenze, e possono essere anche previste più fasi successive di triturazione. Lo scopo finale è in ogni caso quello di ridurre sensibilmente la pezzatura dei rifiuti, che normalmente concludono la fase di triturazione trasformati in frammenti di pochi centimetri e successivamente selezionati da altre macchine a seconda della tipologia del materiale che li compone. Nel contempo, tutte le polveri generate nel corso di questo processo vengono aspirate, per evitare che rovinino la qualità del materiale selezionato e per prevenire qualsiasi tipo di contaminazione ambientale.
Once the waste has been secured and summarily disassembled, the material is shredded: the material is loaded onto conveyor belts that send it to a double or four shaft shredder. Depending on the type of waste, the machine can be used at different powers, and several successive shredding stages can also be envisaged. The final purpose is in any case to significantly reduce the size of the waste, which normally concludes the shredding phase transformed into fragments of a few centimeters and subsequently selected by other machines according to the type of material that composes them. At the same time, all the powders generated during this process are sucked up, to prevent them from ruining the quality of the selected material and to prevent any type of environmental contamination.
